NSW: Easter petrol price hike referred to ACCC

Sydney's 10-cent a litre Easter weekend petrol price rise has been referred to the
Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

As prices soar nationwide, New South Wales Fair Trading Minister JOHN WATKINS has referred
the matter to the ACCC after learning of the overnight hike.

Mr WATKINS says nothing appears to be sacred to the petrol companies - not Easter,
not consumers, not families travelling on holidays.

Australian Institute of Petroleum executive director BRYAN NYE has welcomed the inquiry
and says claims of profiteering are unfounded.

A spokeswoman for the ACCC says action will be taken if there is any evidence of anti-competitive
behaviour.

Speaking in Perth, Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD says petrol prices are high because of
high world oil prices.
