NSW: Double lung transplant teenager recovering in hospital
A teenager who received a double-lung transplant after a severe bout with pneumoniais expected to make a full recovery.
SCOTT TOWNEND -- a Year 10 student from Sydney's northern suburbs -- had flu symptomsearlier this year but soon developed pneumonia, with both of his lungs collapsing within24 hours.
He was kept alive on a special breathing machine for a month at St George Hospitaluntil a donor was found so the ground-breaking operation could go ahead.
SCOTT was too ill to be moved so a 50-strong transplant team from St Vincents Hospitalwas rushed across the city to perform the life-saving operation.
SCOTT -- still recovering in hospital -- is expected to make a full recovery and return to school.
The world's first single lung transplant was performed in 1983 and the first successfuldouble lung transplant in 1986, both by Canadian surgeons.
