ExciteAtHome Faces Job Cutbacks

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (AP) -- At Home Corp., which does business as ExciteAtHome, is cutting 250 jobs, or about 8 percent of its work force, citing slowdown in online advertising revenue.

ExciteAtHome, which provides high-speed Internet access over cable modems and runs a Web portal, said the cuts will affect mainly producers of online content and employees in the finance and human relations departments.

Spokeswoman Alison Bowman said Tuesday that small offices in Seattle and Austin, Texas, will be closed.

The move became necessary after the downturn in Internet advertising forced the company to change its revenue expectations, Bowman said.

``We think this is a prudent decision in line with what we can expect in the future,'' she said.

Shares of ExciteAtHome were down 31 cents, or more than 3 percent, to $8.29 on the Nasdaq Stock Market in afternoon trading Tuesday.

The company plans to release its fourth-quarter earnings and provide its 2001 outlook Thursday.
